Father’s Day fun with The Sealed Knot at Grimsthorpe Castle
Look no further than Grimsthorpe Castle this Father’s Day (Sunday 18th June) for a fantastic family fun day out! The Sealed Knot, the ever-popular Civil War re-enactment society, will be storming the scenic grounds with their weapons, gunpowder and historical costumes to give visitors an exciting glimpse of 18th-century life.
First established in 1968, The Sealed Knot is the UK’s oldest re-enactment society and the biggest in Europe. With the magnificent castle as their backdrop, they’ll bring history to life at Grimsthorpe by staging military scraps and battles, offering visitors a chance to experience at first hand a nation at war with itself. Watch as two opposing sides fight for either the king or the parliamentarians! Which side will you take? Choose wisely however… as Grimsthorpe Castle was a Royalist stronghold during the turbulent Civil War, King Charles I himself will be present on the day!
As well as weaponry and skirmishes, the Sealed Knot will demonstrate more ordinary 18th-century life in their Living History Camp, which consists of trades who supplied the armies and crafts of the period, all presented by folks knowledgeable in their field. Take a closer look at some of the guns and armour in use, watch some traditional cooking on a real open fire, and chat to the fascinating team to find out more about the period.
‘We’re very excited to have the Sealed Knot here this Father’s Day,’ says Joley Baker, Visitor Experience Lead at Grimsthorpe Castle, ‘I’m hoping that lots of families will be able to engage with history in an immersive way. The sight of reenactors in costume, the sounds of weapons being fired and the smell of gunpowder and traditional foods being cooked in the Living History Camp will surely inspire the imagination in kids and adults alike! A perfect day out for dads and granddads, too.’
Entry is from 10.30am, and the event is included in a normal day ticket to Grimsthorpe which can be purchased online or at the Ticket Hut on the day. Season Ticket holders and Historic House members go free.
